Pitching Prospects Mid-Season Review

This one isn't like the typical tracker I do every week. I'm still going to have the table of stats, but I'm not going to have the weekly hot/not hot lists. I'm going to have a list of players whose stock is up and whose stock is down. This will be based on a variety of factors. I thought about having a stock unchanged category, but I think that would lead me to sitting on the fence for too many guys. I'm also going to include players that have been assigned to other levels that normally don't appear on the spreadsheet. There are definitely some tough calls, and players I could've put in either category.

Stock Up
Wilmer Font, BAK: Font desperately needs to cut down on his walks, but after starting off a second straight year with Hickory, earned a promotion and is striking out more batters.

Michael Main, BAK: Main spent most of last year with the Blaze, and he's generally improving on last season's numbers. He'll need to cut down on the home runs though.

Andrew Carraway, HD: The ERA and WHIP may look ugly, but he's been very good away from Stater Bros. Stadium and has only had a few bad outings on the season.

Maikel Cleto, HD: He's getting hit very hard, but his stuff has been great, and he hasn't walked very many either. Spent some time on the DL with an injury.

Kenn Kasparek, HD: Kasparek is old for the level for sure, but he pounds the strike zone and gets outs. He's pitching well, so I can't penalize him for being old. It's up to Seattle to assign him to the correct level.

Nate Eovaldi, IE: People really like his stuff, but it's not reflected in his strikeouts yet. He's been pretty average, which is okay for a young guy in the Cal League.

Kenley Jansen, IE/CHT: He hasn't been pitching for very long in his career, but he dominated the Cal League and earned his promotion.

Aaron Miller, IE: He needs to cut down on the walks, but his stuff has been great, and teams have found it very difficult to hit against him. Ignore the low win total.

Cole St. Clair, IE/CHT: He's struggling in AA, but he's age appropriate for the level and quickly earned a promotion out of the Cal League.

Jorge Reyes, LE: Very tough call. He gets hit pretty hard in some starts, but I really like the K/BB. This is his first year in full season ball.

Dallas Keuchel, LAN: This is Keuchel's first year in pro ball, and he's doing a solid job in a tough environment for pitchers. By far Lancaster's best starter so far.

Rex Brothers, MOD: Brothers could be poised to advance through the system quickly. He needs to cut down on his walks, but he's striking out a lot of guys and not allowing many hits.

Juan Nicasio, MOD: His K/BB is great, and he would be an All Star if he didn't go through that ugly stretch about a month into the season.

Tyler Chatwood, RC/ARK: Chatwood walks a few too many, but he's been on helium this season. He strikes out a lot of guys and gets a ton of ground balls too.

Pat Corbin, RC: The sample size is small as far as his Cal League stats go, but he was very good in the Midwest League and earned a promotion to Rancho Cucamonga.

Pil Joon Jang, RC/ORM: Jang has only made a couple spot starts for the Quakes, but they were both very good. I really think he deserves a shot to compete in the Cal League long term.

Will Smith, RC/SLC: I thought his promotion to AAA would be a temporary thing, but he's been there for awhile at this point. Smith is struggling a bit, but they felt he was ready for it.

Drew Taylor, RC/ARK: Taylor was a bit old for the Cal League, so he dominated and got promoted to face some tougher competition.

Eric Surkamp, SJ: The strikeouts are down a little from previous seasons, but Surkamp is still having a strong year with a K/BB over 4.

Craig Westcott, SJ: The peripherals are just okay, and he needs to cut down on his walks. However, Westcott is a deserving All Star game starter.

Fautino De Los Santos, STO/MID: He's a forgotten part of the Nick Swisher trade, but he's battling back from an injury and pitched very well for Stockton.

Paul Smyth, STO: Since being drafted by Oakland, Smyth has done nothing but get outs. He's not that old for the level either.

Josh Collmenter, VIS/MOB: It didn't take long to earn a promotion after starting a second straight season with Visalia. He's still old for AA, but he also held his own in a few AAA starts too.

Wade Miley, VIS: Miley is a guy that makes me want to sit on the fence. The ERA is great, but the K/BB isn't. Only allowing one home run on the year is great.

Stock Down
Wilfredo Boscan, BAK: He's getting hit harder than in the past and also has a declining K/BB from last year. Still young for the league though, so he has plenty of time.

Kennil Gomez, BAK: This is his second year with Bakersfield, and it has been a disaster. He's not striking out anyone, but he's also allowing more hits and walks.

Carlos Pimentel, BAK: Pimentel was a tough one since I think his numbers are inflated by a couple bad outings, but I had to lean towards down because his WHIP is below league average.

Geison Aguasviva, IE: It took a little while for Aguasviva's career to really kick off, but being moved from the rotation to the bullpen in A ball isn't good for the future.

Ethan Martin, IE: He's shown flashes, like his CGSHO, but the consistency isn't there yet. The strikeouts are great, but he needs to cut down on the walks badly.

Jon Michael Redding, IE: All of a sudden, he's walking too many batters in addition to still being pretty hittable. Doesn't really strike out many batters.

Chris Fetter, LE/?: Fetter has battled injuries this year, but I got the impression that he could still pitch again this year. He can't afford to be missing these starts.

Leandro Cespedes, LAN: Like Gomez, Cespedes is repeating the level and not doing as well. Hits are down a little and strikeouts are up, but the walks are up a lot too.

Brad Dydalewicz, LAN/LEX: 2010 has been a disaster for Dydalewicz. He's still young, but he needs to get his confidence back and come back to Lancaster as a much better pitcher.

Michael Schurz, LAN/LEX: This is his first season in pro ball for Schurz, but the results definitely haven't been there yet. He is getting some strikeouts though.

Ross Seaton, LAN: It's tough to pitch at Lancaster, but Seaton has struggled on the road too. All of his peripherals have gotten worse, but the walks are still better than average.

Dan Houston, MOD: Houston's strikeouts are declining again, and he's been way too hittable. Walk rate is a little below average too.

Ryan Chaffee, RC/AZA: Chaffee really struggled with the Quakes and actually got demoted after making his best start of the season.

Chris Scholl, RC: I think relief prospects have to be really good to improve their stock since they're already confined to the bullpen, and he hasn't been. Walks are down, but so are his strikeouts.

Aaron King, SJ/SK: King was walking way too many with San Jose, but time is still on his side. He'll try and improve in a short season league again this year.

Kyle Nicholson, SJ: His WHIP indicates that his ERA should be lower than it is, but 24 year olds need to pitch much better than this to progress through the system.

Ari Ronick, SJ: I feel bad for including Ronick because he's battling a tough elbow injury, but missing a majority of the season certainly can't help. Hopefully he can work his way back.

Jason Stoffel, SJ: Statlines for relievers can be very volatile due to the low amount of innings, and Stoffel has been on the wrong side of a few poor appearances so far.

Ben Hornbeck, STO: He's pitching well at this level for sure, but he was great with Stockton last year and has nothing left to prove at this level. He needs to regain his confidence and go back to AA Midland.

Kevin Eichhorn, VIS/MIS: Eichhorn is still young, but this will be his third year pitching in a short season league. He only made one spot start for Visalia.

Trevor Harden, VIS: Like Ronick, Harden has dealt with injuries all year and has hardly pitched. Hopefully he can recover and make it back.
