Hot
Ethan Martin, IE: Martin is an easy choice after last night's start, a complete game shutout. He struck out nine and only walked two. Martin has only walked five in his last 15 innings, which is a big improvement from his previous few starts. If he consistently shows the command he has in his last two starts, he's going to take off in the Dodgers' organization.

Eric Surkamp, SJ: Martin threw the league's second complete game shutout last night, but it was Eric Surkamp that threw the first 12 days ago. He struck out seven and only allowed two hits and one walk to dominate Bakersfield, the victim of Martin's CGSHO. On the season, Surkamp has only allowed one home run and a sub-1.00 WHIP.

Rex Brothers, MOD: As a first round pick and experienced college player, I expected a little more from Brothers coming into this season. In the last couple weeks, he has delivered. His stat line went from good but not great to very good, in large part to a five strikeout in two inning performance on the 19th. Brothers has only allowed two hits and one run in his last six appearances.

Andrew Carraway, HD: Carraway's April was not memorable, but May has been very kind to him. Carraway has pitched seven or more innings in his last three starts and has only allowed five earned runs. His command has been very good all season, and he's starting to strike out more batters too; two of his last four starts have been nine strikeout outings.

Jason Stoffel, SJ: I listed Stoffel as not hot two weeks ago, and he bounced back with eight straight scoreless appearances since then. In that span, he has only allowed two hits and walked two batters in addition to striking out 10. The overall season numbers still don't look great, but his ERA is skewed from those two bad appearances earlier in the season. As a college reliever drafted in the 4th round, Stoffel could rise through the system quickly.

Not hot
Kennil Gomez, BAK: When Wilmer Font was added from A Hickory, someone in Bakersfield's young rotation had to lose their spot, and it was Gomez. This is his second full year in the Cal League, and he just hasn't made any progress. Right now, he's kind of in no man's land; he hasn't pitched since the 15th, but he hasn't been placed on the DL or sent to another level.

Michael Schurz, LAN: I've said I hesitate to put relievers in these sections because one bad outing can ruin a stat line for weeks, but things have certainly been rough for Schurz lately. He was tagged for five runs in his appearance which only lasted one out. Schurz also gave up two runs over his three appearances before that. The strikeouts have been there, but unfortunately hits and walks have been too.

Kyle Nicholson, SJ: Last time I joked about Nicholson being included here, but he had another ugly start on the 26th. Nicholson has been getting hit hard this season with a .324 BAA. He's not walking many, but he's not striking guys out either. 23 of the 33 runs he has allowed this season have come in three starts, so if he can cut out those bad outings, the numbers will start to look better.

Ross Seaton, LAN: I don't want to seem like I'm picking on Seaton, but his last three starts have not been good. He has allowed four earned runs in three straight starts and lasted six, six and four innings in those starts. Seaton only has one quality start on the year and is tied for second in the league in losses. His command is back, and he's actually striking out more batters than usual, but 24 hits in the last three starts has been a problem.

Wilfredo Boscan, BAK: Boscan's biggest problem as a prospect going forward is a lack of strikeouts. He hasn't walked many batters, but lately Boscan has been getting hit very hard. 19 hits in his last two starts have led to nine runs in six innings. One improvement has been a decrease in home runs allowed which was an issue at the start of the season.

San Jose has been on a great run lately to the top of the division. Two weeks ago, they were sitting at 16-16 and in 4th place. The rest of the North just hasn't played that well lately. Modesto and Visalia have pretty much broke even over the last couple weeks and Bakersfield and Stockton have just been losing games. The odd thing about Bakersfield is that they should be playing much better. They've gotten great pitching this year and according to this, should be the second best team in the division and only 1.5 games behind San Jose.

High Desert's pitching isn't overachieving anymore, but they should still be the best team in the league. Lake Elsinore's offense isn't as strong as they were earlier this month, but the pitching has stepped up lately, including two shutouts and the near perfect game. Nate Tenbrink being promoted to AA could impact High Desert's lineup. Rancho Cucamonga is still right around where they should be, and Inland Empire and Lancaster are both underachieving. They're in huge holes right now and time is running out, so those teams might need to wait until the second half to compete for a playoff spot.
