Prospect Tracker 5/14 Edition: Pitchers

This is a bit later than I wanted obviously, but a hockey game had my attention for most of the night. This one is a bit of an adjustment because I had to judge hot and not hot based on recent performances and not overall season stats which makes it a lot less cut and dry. In the injuries section, I only mentioned players new to the DL.

Hot

Dallas Keuchel, LAN: His overall season numbers are still just okay, but it's important to keep in mind that a lot of his starts this season will take place in the league's most hitter friendly environments. I don't keep track of game scores for starters which I kind of regret, but Keuchel's last start would be up there among the leaders this season. Nine shutout innings deserves recognition.

Aaron Miller, IE: He has one clunker since the last edition of the pitcher tracker, but the other two starts were very good. His walks still need to get under control, but Miller is pitching a very good season in his first full year of pro ball. He has 18 strikeouts in his last three starts which totaled 16.1 IP. Despite the very good numbers, he does not have a win this season.

Kenn Kasparek, HD: High Desert might be more unkind to pitchers than any other park in baseball, but it hasn't affected Kasparek yet this season. His road ERA is much better than his home ERA, but he's more than holding his own at home too (4.50 ERA). He doesn't get many ground balls which could hurt him eventually, but right now he's leading an unlikely very good pitching staff in 2010.

Carlos Pimentel, BAK: Pimentel might be the first guy I listed here that was definitely not good on the last tracker, but he's hot right now. He's not striking out many batters, but he hasn't allowed a run in his last two starts (12 IP). He really only had two bad starts this season, and his control is getting better as the season goes on.

Tyler Chatwood, RC: Chatwood is another guy who needs to get the walks under control, but otherwise his season has been great. He strikes a lot of guys out and has proven to be tough to hit so far in 2010. He isn't getting as many groundouts as he was to start the season, but he has 15 strikeouts in his last two starts. Once he starts walking fewer batters, he should be able to go a little deeper into games.

Not
Jason Stoffel, SJ: Stoffel only had two bad outings, but that can kill a reliever's ERA, especially early in the year. In back to back appearances on 5/2 and 5/4, Stoffel was charged with a total of eight earned runs while only recording two outs. Since then in two appearances, he has struck out five guys in two innings.

Juan Nicasio, MOD: I said a lot of great things about Nicasio last time, but I have to be fair and criticize him for his recent bad outings. His K:BB ratio is still really good; he's just been getting hit around a lot lately. Nicasio has given up nine hits in each of his last three starts, resulting in 16 earned runs.

Ross Seaton, LAN: Seaton still isn't striking many batters out, an issue that carried over from last year. Lately his control hasn't been there which is uncharacteristic. In his last three starts, Seaton has allowed 18 hits in 15 IP. That's not very good, but when eight walks are added in, things get worse.

Dan Houston, MOD: Houston got hammered two starts ago which inflates his H/9 a little, but it's still an ongoing problem this season. Houston has allowed at least six hits in each start this season, and his walk rate isn't anything special either. More baserunners obviously leads to more runs, and that has been clear with 12 earned runs in his last two starts.

Kyle Nicholson, SJ: Really, only a couple of his starts have been bad this season, and I just wanted to point out that he allowed seven runs in five innings last night and got a win because his team scored 21 runs. Actually, he has been very good besides two bad starts and doesn't deserve to be here.

Injured
Kyle Greenwalt, LAN: Hurt his ankle on 5/5 and was placed on the DL...

Moved on
Geison Aguasviva, IE: Sent back to extended Spring Training after struggling in several consecutive appearances...

Will Smith, RC: Promoted to AAA Salt Lake to fill in for some players that got bumped up to the majors...

On the radar
Bryan Woodall, VIS
Justin Fitzgerald, SJ
Robert Fish, STO
Kurt Yacko, MOD
Ethan Hollingsworth, MOD
David Berner, LAN
Brad Brach, LE
Cody Eppley, BAK
