Hot
Kyle Russell, IE: It seems like we're talking about Kyle Russell every week, and for good reason. Russell leads the Cal League in home runs with 14 and has pretty much carried the 66ers lineup on his back this year. Of course with Russell, we can't go without mentioning the strikeouts. He ranks third in strikeouts, but he is also among the league leaders in walks. Russell is one of three active Cal Leaguers with a 1.000 OPS.
Dennis Raben, HD: Raben missed the entire 2009 season with a knee injury, and after a solid start with A Clinton, he was promoted to High Desert. He only has eight Cal League games under his belt, but it's been a great start. Raben is a former second round pick, so the talent is definitely there. The strikeouts are a bit much in the early going, but the power is there and so are the walks.
Rich Poythress, HD: Last time, I said Poythress wasn't hitting for much power, so of course he hits four home runs in his last 10 games. He's also hitting .375 in that span and just had a nice hitting streak broken up in High Desert's last game. His road OPS isn't as good as his home OPS which is to be expected with a High Desert player, but seven of his 11 home runs have come on the road.
Drew Cumberland, LE: Lake Elsinore is rolling to one of the best records in professional baseball despite a few key hitters struggling. As Baseball America mentioned in this week's hot sheet, Cumberland went 3 for 4 on opening day, and his average has not dropped below .300 all season. He has four home runs in his last 10 games, but Cumberland's game is putting the ball in play and using his speed.
Grant Green, STO: Like Poythress, Green was a guy I listed as not hot on the last prospect tracker. Green has been hitting for more power in the last 10 games with six extra base hits. He still needs to walk a little more, but his season has turned around in the last couple weeks for sure. His stolen base percentage has improved a little bit as well, but he's still below 50% for the season.
Not hot
Jaff Decker, LE: Decker was not hot last time too, and he hasn't improved on his season yet. He's striking out at an astronomical rate, and he's not walking either. Decker only has one home run and just hasn't contributed at all. Fortunately for Lake Elsinore, they have a great team and can wait for Decker to make adjustments and get up to speed. However, they have a couple other guys struggling at the plate right now too.
Mike Bianucci, BAK: Bianucci had a strong start to the season despite missing a number of games, but he hit just .188 in May. He's 2 for his last 40, and he's showing the same problems he had in the Cal League last year. He has good power, but he doesn't make good contact and strikes out a bit too much.
Allan Dykstra, LE: Dykstra has struggled period since becoming a pro, and he has to turn around his career soon. There is no doubt that he has a good approach at the plate with the amount of walks he takes, but he just doesn't make good contact. His fly ball percentage is much higher than the league average for his second straight season. Dykstra has also shown good power, but he has to put the ball in play more.
Tyler Ladendorf, STO: Ladendorf has been shuttled between Stockton and AAA Sacramento a couple times this year and hasn't had success at either level. His OPS is just .405 in his last 10 games and only has one double and one walk. Like Bianucci, Ladendorf's start wasn't bad, but right now he isn't making any contact at all.
Vince Belnome, LE: I hate to pick on Lake Elsinore, but they have had some struggling hitters. Belnome is still walking a lot which is always helpful during slumps, but right now the balls aren't dropping in for hits. The overall season numbers are still good though, but the average and slugging have dropped a lot since the last tracker was posted.
