Hot
Nate Eovaldi, IE: Yesterday, Nate Eovaldi was named to the Cal League All Star team. I said that teammate Aaron Miller should've gone instead, but that doesn't mean Eovaldi's season hasn't been improving lately. He gave up some runs in his last start, but his prior start was a complete game shutout. He's striking out more batters and walking less, so he might be adjusting to the league.
Wilmer Font, BAK: Wilmer Font's first start was ugly (6 ER in 2 IP), but his last three have been great. Font struggled in a second go-around in the South Atlantic League, but he got the call to Bakersfield and is pitching well as the league's youngest pitcher. He has 19 strikeouts and just five walks in his last three starts, and he has only allowed one earned run in those three starts.
Kenn Kasparek, HD: Kenn Kasparek was also named to the All Star team, and he could definitely make a case for being the starter in that game. In his last start, he threw a complete game shutout and struck out a season high eight. In the start before that, Kasparek allowed one earned run in seven innings. He doesn't have huge strikeouts numbers even though he's older than the average player, but batters are only hitting .225 against him.
Juan Nicasio, MOD: After going through some May struggles, Juan Nicasio is getting back to what made him one of the league's most dominant starters at the start of the season. His last three starts have totaled 19 innings, and he only allowed three earned runs in those starts. He also struck out 21 batters and walked only four. Some of Modesto's staff is struggling, so a re-energized Nicasio might be what they need as the first half winds down.
Ben Hornbeck, STO: Like Font, Ben Hornbeck started at a different level this season and struggled in his first start in the Cal League. Like Font, he has since rebounded, although Hornbeck hasn't been quite as good. If he keeps pitching well, I think he'll end up in AA again, so I don't expect him to have too many appearances on the tracker. He has only allowed four earned runs in his last three starts.
Not hot
Wilfredo Boscan, BAK: Wilfredo Boscan's last start was one of his best of the season, but his overall season numbers still aren't great. His command has been worse lately, although that hasn't been a problem for most of the season. The problem is a high BAA, including 26 hits allowed in his last three starts. He's striking batters out at a better rate, but it came at the expense at a higher hit and walk rate compared to last year with A Hickory.
Geison Aguasviva, IE: Geison Aguasviva spent a lot of time in XST after struggling in early April, and now that he's back, he's working out of the bullpen and not in the team's starting rotation. Although it's a small sample size, his relief work has been worse than when he was in the rotation. He's getting hit hard and walking more than he has in past years, so the Cal League assignment has just been rough so far.
Ethan Martin, IE: If the prospect tracker was the only thing someone read here, it would appear that his season has been a roller coaster... and that would be correct. I think I've listed him as hot and cold already, and he has definitely been cold since his CGSHO. His last two appearances have totaled 7.2 innings, and Martin allowed ten earned runs and only struck out three batters in those appearances.
Michael Schurz, LAN: For the second tracker in a row, Michael Schurz has had a real clunker the day before I post this which leads to him being included in this section. The entire Lancaster staff struggled last night, allowing 18 runs, but the game really got out of hand when Schurz was charged with five runs in 2.2 IP. He actually strikes out a decent amount of batters, but 14 walks in 16 innings have been a huge problem.
Eric Surkamp, SJ: I really hesitate to include him here because he's a deserving All Star and is having a great season, but Eric Surkamp had a bad start lately, and it was a slow two weeks for struggling pitchers. Against Bakersfield last week, Surkamp allowed seven runs in four innings but still wasn't charged with the loss. His ERA skyrocketed after this start, but it still shouldn't take away from the season he's having.
Injured
Ari Ronick, SJ: Ronick was placed on the DL with an elbow injury again...
Moved on
Chris Fetter, LE: Fetter has been on the DL for most of the year and was recently sent down to XST...
Brad Dydalewicz, LAN: Dydalewicz has had a tougher year than just about anyone else this season and was assigned to A Lexington...
Ryan Chaffee, RC: Chaffee had some rough starts, but he was actually assigned to a lower level after making his best start of the season...
Pil Joon Jang, RC: Jang made a second solid spot start for the Quakes but was sent back to XST afterwards...
On the radar
Bryan Woodall, VIS
Chase Anderson, VIS
Ethan Hollingsworth, MOD
David Berner, LAN
