Hot
Ryan Ortiz, STO: He's not getting regular at bats in the Stockton lineup, but he probably should be. The average isn't there yet, but Ortiz has been hot lately after a bit of a slow start. He'll need to cut down on his strikeouts, but he's walking a good amount and hitting for some power when he's in the lineup. Teams have attempted a lot of steals against him, so maybe defense is keeping him out of the lineup. I'm going to have more on catcher defense in an entry soon.
Vince Belnome, LE: Belnome was only a 28th round pick out of West Virginia, but he has done nothing but hit since joining the professional ranks. Lake Elsinore has had one of the most explosive offenses in the league so far this season, and Belnome has been a strong contributor lately after a slow start. He has a 1.100 OPS in his last 10 games, including an OBP over .500. His OPS is up nearly 100 points since the last tracker was posted.
Kyle Russell, IE: Inland Empire has struggled tremendously in May, but Kyle Russell is still hitting. The 66ers lineup has had very little depth this season, but Russell has done a lot of damage himself. He certainly needs to strike out a lot less, but his power cannot be denied. I thought he might be promoted to AA Chattanooga after the Andrew Lambo suspension, but apparently the Dodgers thought it would be better if he stayed put for now.
Paul Goldschmidt, VIS: Goldschmidt was supposed to be a part of a dangerous middle of the order for Visalia, but he did not get off to a good start. After posting an April OPS under .700, he's slugging a lot better, hitting four home runs in his last 10 games. He's another guy that strikes out too much and doesn't walk enough, but he is definitely hitting better than the start of the season.
Not hot
Jaff Decker, LE: The much heralded prospect is finally back after a hamstring injury suffered in spring training, but he has not had an ideal start. He has a lot of time to make up after missing time in spring training and five weeks of the regular season, so it might take him a little bit to catch up to the pitching. He only has two hits and is striking out way too much. It's probably just a small sample size struggle, and nothing to worry about.
Jake Rife, RC: Like Decker, Rife hasn't gotten many at bats under his belt, but those at bats haven't been good. He hasn't hit for any power at all so far, and he has way too many strikeouts. He played 31 games for the Quakes last year and only had a .654 OPS, so the Angels are hoping that more experience at the level leads to better results.
Jay Austin, LAN: He looked like he had turned a corner a couple weeks ago, but the power hasn't been there for Austin lately. He's walking a little less, but still a little more than last year, and hasn't had an extra base hit in his last 10 games. Toolsy players like Austin are going to go through steaks like this, and if he's able to bounce back from this, maybe he truly is finally getting results.
Grant Green, STO: His first month was only okay, but he really hasn't shown any improvement. Green has made a lot of errors in the field and his power has been lacking lately. Green only has two extra base hits in his last 10 games, both doubles. He's not striking out an extraordinary amount, but he's not walking enough either. He has only been successful in 20% of his steal attempts too.
Rich Poythress, HD: His strikeout and walk rates are pretty much the same as last time, so maybe Poythress has just been unlucky the last couple weeks. His average has dropped nearly 30 points, and he only has one home run in his last 10 games. He hasn't hit for much power since being drafted by Seattle, and that could be a problem for a 1B prospect down the road.
